On Day 5 and 6 Stop at Fuerte Amador, Panama

Located west of Panama City at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, Fuerte Amador is a gateway to exploring the many faces of this unique Central American country. The impressive engineering of the canal itself is a wonder to behold; a quick trip to the Miraflores Locks' visitor center with its panoramic observation decks offers the chance to watch behemoth barges thread their way through the legendary manmade waterway. Just minutes from the cruise port, the recently opened Biomuseo is a Frank Gehry–designed natural-history museum dedicated to Panama's ecological marvels. And Fuerte Amador sits within easy taxi distance of Panama City, the bustling, multicultural capital metropolis where visitors can wander a conquistador-era UNESCO World Heritage Site, sip coffee in street cafés and peruse modern malls. For a rural escape, it only takes an hour or two by car to trade the city for the tropical rain forests of Soberanía National Park, where an aerial tram carries passengers through treetops, or to meet Emberá tribespeople in their traditional village along the Chagres River.

Quilting Instructor is Krisi Selvig

I was born and raised in Southeast Alaska. I grew up playing sports and deckhanding on my father's commercial fishing boat. I learned to read patterns and sew early on, assisting my mother with making clothes for the family. I still love fishing, playing softball, volleyball, and pickleball, and quilting!

I have been quilting for 25 years; the first quilt I completed was for my son when he was 4. I discovered how much I love to make quilts.  I retired after working for the State of Alaska for 30 years and now I get to teach classes and make shop samples at Raintree Quilting in Juneau, Alaska. I enjoy designing, picking colors, and piecing the top. I have recently been exploring English Paper Piecing (EPP) and have a large portable project that I continue to work on wherever I go.

Ft. Lauderdale (Day 1)

Known as the "Venice of America," Fort Lauderdale has 165 miles of canals that wind through this waterfront city. With plenty of sun and sand, you'll find the beaches inviting and only minutes from elegant shops and championship golf courses. After dark, the town offers many five-star restaurants and exciting nightclubs, all set in a lush tropical environment.
Attractions & Activities
People have been flocking to Fort Lauderdale's beaches for decades. And with good reason. Fort Lauderdale Beach is a two-mile strip of beautiful beach featuring the recently renovated Promenade, which offers all sorts of bars, restaurants and shops.

George Town (Day 3)

In a place that forgot to age, beauty abounds as far as the eye can see. Endless cool, powdery sand meets sheer coral reefs in the area aptly called Seven Mile Beach. Along the way theres Pedros Castle, Turtle Crawls and the wild orchards and parrots of Rum Point. In this British Crown Colony, over 100 species of rare birds coexist with fascinating sea life and blossoming flora and fauna.
Attractions & Activities
Experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure: snorkeling with stingrays at Stingray City Sandbar. These relatively tame creatures will swim right into your arms and eat from your hand. They have velvety soft skin and love to have their bellies rubbed. Despite their frightening name, they are very gentle and won't hurt you as long as you stay away from their tails.

Enter Panama Canal Cristobal (Day 5)

Cruising Panama Canal (Day 5)

Exit Panama Canal Balboa (Day 5)

Fuerte Amador (Days 5, 6)

This recently developed port with its modern shopping plazas is just next door to Panama City, once a vital link along the Golden Main. Be sure to visit both old and new, and shop for duty-free bargains, including the famous "molas" hand-woven by the Cuna Indians of San Blas.

Crossing The Equator (Day 7)

Manta (Day 8)

Manta is a picturesque and important port on the Pacific Ocean, located in a dry tropical forest with an average annual temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 F). Because it has some of South America's most breathtaking beaches, Manta was selected as the site of the sixth South American Windsurfing Championship. It is reknown for its diving and sport fishing. It also serves as the primary industrial port of Ecuador's tuna industry.
Attractions & Activities
This port city affords the visitor unprecedented access to ancient Manta culture, including the small rafts once used by the Manta circa 500 - 1500 AD. A short jaunt from the port is the Bahia de Manta. There you'll find el Parque Nacional Machalilla with its cloud forests, archeological sites and colonies of nesting seabirds.

Salaverry (Day 10)

This is our gateway to the treasures of northern Peru. Named after the Spanish city where conquistador Francisco Pizarro was born, Trujillo's stately mansions and decorated balconies date back as far as 1534. This is the Moche Valley, home to the extraordinary adobe citadels built a thousand years earlier by the Chimus and Mochicas. Most remarkable of all is Chan-Chan. Capital of the Kingdom of the Great Chimu and the largest city in South America to be built of mud, it once covered an area of over 12 square miles. Our guides will pick out the highlights which include murals that tell of the people's ancient rituals and stepped pyramids that rise over 90ft high.
Attractions & Activities
Trujillo is the most spotless city in Peru. Sightsee around the graceful colonial churches and monasteries, or head for the nearby ruins of the Chimu city of Chan Chan, a fascinating pre-Incan development.

Lima (Callao) (Days 11, 12)

Lima, located seven miles form the port of Callao, was named the City of the Kings. Its grand old quarter is rich with Spanish colonial architecture: The Plaza del Armas has some prime examples. Late in the afternoon, the port of Callao will be filled with fishing boats, returning from a day at sea.

General San Martin (Day 13)

In 1950 the town took its name from the Libertador General San Martin. It currently shows a series of important tourist centres and others just developing, all of which play different roles according to the services and attractions they deliver. In its surroundings one can enjoy trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, mountaineering, trout fishing, photo safaris and flora and fauna observation.
Attractions & Activities
From Libertador General San Martin one can tour the Hot Springs circuit called El Caimancito, and others such as Aguas Calientes, Manantial de la Quinta Laguna and El Palmar. From this location, and after trekking or mule riding through paths carved in the mountains for six hours, one arrives to the Alto Calilegua spot. From here, and after four hours of steep walking, one reaches the top of the Hermoso and Amarillo mountains.

Coquimbo (Day 16)

Along with its sister-city La serena, Coquimbo is a popular seacoast resort for South American vactioners. Sample the fresh local seafood, visit the Spanish colonial churches of La Serena, or travel up the lovely agricultural Equi Valley to the home of poet Gavriel Mistral, and the Cerro Tololo Observatory´ hugh telescope.

San Antonio (Day 17)

San Antonio is a Chilean city, commune and the capital of the San Antonio Province in the Valparaíso Region. It is the hub of the fishing area that spans the Chilean coast from Rocas de Santo Domingo to Cartagena. Its port is the largest in terms of freight handled and the busiest in the western coast of South America. The city lies on hills and coastal dunes, immediately north of the mouth of the Maipo River and is crossed in two sections by estuaries, of Arévalo to the north and of El Sauce in the section of Llolleo.
